INTRODUCTION

Teaching is a challenging and time consuming activity.  Teachers are constantly looking for new ideas and practical work for science subjects. Many have to teach new or unfamiliar topics with limited time to plan and try out suitable activities. Pupils usually hope that science will offer exciting activities or experiments and science teachers face the challenge of meeting these expectations. Here comes the significance of source book and hand book.

Source book is a book giving information such as facts on a particular subject. The source book for teaching science is a unique comprehensive resource designed to give middle and high school science teachers a wealth of information that will enhance any science curriculum.  Filled with innovative tools, dynamic activities and practical lesson plans that are grounded in theory, research and national standards, the book offers new and experienced science teachers powerful strategies  and original ideas that will enhance the teaching of physics, chemistry, biology and the earth and space sciences.

Hand book: The name hand book may sometimes be applied to reference works that are not pockets sized but to provide ready reference.  It is a treatise on a special subject.  Now a day it is often a simple hut all-embracing treatment, containing concise information and being small enough to be held in the hand.

IMPORTANCE OF SOURCE BOOK AND HANDBOOK

SOURCE BOOK :-

The term source book is used to describe many different kinds of books such as collection of more articles, Bibliographies, biographies, printed archival sources, directories and so on.

The source book for teaching science is designed to compliment any secondary school science curriculum.  Science teachers will find ready to use demonstrations, experiments.  Illustrations, games, puzzles, analogies lessons, activities and strategies, as well as explanations of how to adopt these for English learners and diverse student populations.  All topics are accompanied by pedagogical principles necessary for successful classroom implementation. Computer based resource for teaching and learning science are incorporated throughout this book. If we require additional resources, we can find it on free website.

According to Hedi Moscovici (CSTE, director) “Source book is an excellent resource for every science teacher it provides both theoretical background and practical applications for science concepts in all four major science areas: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science.”

According to Robert Yager, (Formes president of NSTA, NARST, ASTE, SSMA),  “The source book for teaching science offers specific ways to enhance the curriculum, making at relevant current and personal to students.  It Provides suggestions for meeting the reform visions central to the national standards and it personalizes Science in ways that provide real learning.”

There are source books on evaluation for the teacher.  These are prepared by educational experts and experienced teachers through a series of workshops.

The teacher’s source book serve as a handbook more than in its conventional sense and it helps the teacher providing him with additional materials and information.  A special feature of the book is that it gives enough freedom to the teacher in the choice of methodology or even content not conceded or suggested in the book.  It also gives the teacher a variety of situations, examples, exercises tasks and activities to be chosen from among for class room use.

Hand book:-

A hand book is a type of reference material for teachers or collection of instructions that is intended to provide ready reference.  Hand books deals with any topic and are generally compendiums of information in a particular field or about a particular technique.   In our state hand book is prepared by the SCERT along with text books prepared by them.  It contains summaries of chapters is the Science text books, conceptual development of each topic, list of instructional objectives, specifications, learning activities, teaching aids to be used, evaluation tools, seminars, projects etc. organized and suggested reference for teachers and pupils.  Handbooks are designed to be easily consulted and provide quick answers are a certain area.  “Hand book” sometimes applied to documents that are produced with in an organization that not designed for publication – such as a company handbook for HR, for instance.  In this case the term is used nearly synonymously with “manual”.  Hand books are widely used in the science and in medicine as quick references for various kinds of data.

Advantages

1.    It equips the teacher with sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical suggestions of what is to be taught.

2.    It provides suitable learning experiences for different instructions situations

3.     Help to adopt appropriate methods and approaches of teaching

4.    Help the teacher to prepare various instructional materials.

5.     Help the teacher to evaluate learning using relevant and standard tools of evaluation.

CONCLUSION

From the above information we can conclude that source book and hand book are resourceful materials for science teachers.  These books help the students to develop scientific literacy, reasoning, understanding,  problem solving and research skills through teachers.
